Life, Liberty and a Sanctuary in Montana?

By Tim Ravndal

In northeast Montana, Richland County residents decided to take action that would bring local government back to representing the people’s rights.  Working with the county commissioners, Pastor Jordan Hall of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Sidney brought forward a proposal to create the (perhaps first in the nation) concept of a “Sanctuary County.”

Across America, citizens have been watching the battle unfold in Virginia over the Second Amendment rights of the people.  There, citizens are working county by county to begin a process to instill Second Amendment sanctuary status to those counties.  Even though the Governor and the Virginia Legislature ignored the call by citizens to protect their God-given rights, the citizens, with support from across our nation, took a stand.

In Richland County, Pastor Hall and the local Republicans decided to take the call to a new level.  There is national battleground for preserving life and government sanctioned abortion clinics continue to face challenges in today’s society.  The movement against the Second Amendment of the Constitution has also been placed under scrutiny from coast to coast.

The citizens of Montana’s Richland County determined that a “strike-first formula” is the preferred action in order to protect the individual rights of the citizens.  Waiting for the government to take action or issue the threat to desist was determined to not to be an option.

On January 20th, 2020, citizens gathered together to discuss what they could do to stop the threats against both the inherent right to bear arms and the right to life. The discussion led to the possibility of creating a “Sanctuary County” but it was emphasized by the citizens that the status should not be limited to just the Second Amendment.  This action would include a safe-haven for the unborn, along with the right to keep and bear arms and it was widely cheered by the 150 citizens at that meeting.

Article II Section 12 of the Constitution of Montana is likely one of the most powerful Second Amendment style clauses in any state constitution:

“The right of any person to keep or bear arms in defense of his own home, person, and property, or in aid of the civil power when thereto legally summoned, shall not be called in question, but nothing herein contained shall be held to permit the carrying of concealed weapons.”

Richland County Commissioners Loren Young, Duane Mitchell and Chairman Shane Gorder attended the meeting to discuss the proposed resolution to establish Richland County as a Right to Life and a Second Amendment Sanctuary.

This reporter had the opportunity to visit with Mr. Hall and Tanya Rost at the Montana GOP Winter Kickoff event in Helena.  The following video is our interview.
