Rally Against CPS in Montana

By Tim Ravndal

Parents are finding it increasingly difficult to deal with allegations from Child Protective Services (CPS) around the country.

In Montana, multiple cases of Montana Department of Public Health & Human Services (DPHHS) unjustifiably reaching into the family home have been exposed.  Parents fighting for their children are facing a structure that works to protect the system at the expense of the family.

Child Protective Services (CPS) is on duty to protect children from abuse and neglect, and have done so in many cases. Unfortunately, this is not true in all cases. In their over-zealousness, CPS has been known to place the rights of the parents and children on the shelf.

Recently, a mom that has been fighting to get her child back home took to the streets to call for help. Destiny Field brought her fight to the steps of the Montana Capitol where she, and others, told their stories during a peaceful protest rally.

Destiny had her child removed due to legal infractions lodged against her in the past.  When she tried to get her child back, she found the weight of the system fall down on her head like a ton of bricks.  Recently new claims of violating the law were brought against her by DPHHS.

As Destiny’s battle continues through the system, her story rings loud with other parents that have been wrongfully accused of endangering their children.

Another case highlighted the plight of a grandmother who was refused contact with her grandchild due to infractions by her decades ago in her youth.

Debi Westlake spoke at a recent Peaceful Protest Rally at the Montana Capitol.  Debi declined to get into the details of her plight for justice, due to threats of retaliation from CPS.  Her child was removed based on only the implication of endangerment but an open opportunity to exercise her Constitutional Rights continue to be denied.

Matt Furlong, with The Montana Child Protection Alliance, brought his long standing courage in exposing DPHHS to the podium.  Mr. Furlong has worked to bring accountability to DPHHS for many years but has been faced with the opposition of the elected and appointed officials from the very beginning.  Mr. Furlong states he will continue to fight for family rights.

With the new fiscal year upon Montana Counties, a legal arm of the state is extended as required by Montana law.  In counties across the state, the creation of an “Interdisciplinary Child Information and School Safety Team” is being put into place.

The community intervention team is founded with DPHHS and includes local elected officials and the Montana Office of Public Instruction.

Placing the teams in schools and communities across the state, it is purported that the need is growing due to an ever increasing workload by DPHHS.

We asked a local county attorney if the new team recognizes the lack of accountability to the taxpayers.  Responding through a request for anonymity, theysaid that the problem is not with what DPHHS and OPI do, but rather what they do not do to protect children.

Growing awareness of children being taken from homes across America continues.
