Home Invasion Leads to Fatal Shooting near Post Falls
Update – 10.30.18 – The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office has identified the deceased person in the October 29, 2018 shooting incident near Post Falls, ID as 24 year old Mitchell C. Payette of Post Falls, ID.
The other two parties involved in this incident are identified as Trent J. Slinger-21 and Shelby R. Arlt-25, both of Post Falls, ID.
An autopsy was completed yesterday. The final results of the examination, to include the official cause of death and toxicology reports, will not be complete for approximately 6-8 weeks.
Post Falls, Idaho: This morning at 1:30 a.m., Deputies form the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call of a shooting inside a residence in the 900 block of S. Spokane St. near Post Falls, ID. Upon their arrival, deputies discovered a 24 year old male deceased inside the home from what appears to be gunshot wounds. Major Crime Detectives from KCSO were dispatched to the scene and started their investigation into the incident.
Preliminary, the investigation indicates a male and female were sleeping inside the residence and were awaken by loud crashing noises coming from inside their home. The male resident discovered an intruder had forced his way into the home through a door and was continuing to damage property inside. The resident confronted the intruder verbally telling him to leave. After being told several times to leave, the intruder, who also appears to have been armed during the incident, began aggressing both residents. The male resident fired several rounds from a handgun, which ultimately stopped the intruder.
Due to the nature of the investigation and that it is still active, we do not have any additional information for release at this time. We will not be releasing the names of the male and female victim at this time. The name of the suspected intruder will be released when the primary next of kin notifications are completed.
