As part of a private high school civics class comprised of students in the 7th through 12th grade levels, students were asked to write opinion editorials on topics of their own choosing which reflect current themes in governance and policy-making. Over the course of the next few weeks the class will be tracking the views of and commentary on their op-eds with the goal of generating as much meaningful community engagement as possible. Awards will be given to the students who most successfully generate meaningful community engagement with their op-ed. The Election for Idaho’s Future is in 4 Weeks

Have you ever been disappointed with the candidate options on the general ballot? Have you ever wished there might be a way for that to be able to change? Well, I have some good news for you, there is a way to help decide who goes on the general ballot for you to vote on. In order to do this, it is crucial to vote in the May Primary Elections.
First, what is a Primary Election? Well, a primary election is when everyone in a specific party, votes on the candidates for the upcoming general election. It is this “primary election” that determines who will make it to the General Election. For example, say there are multiple people from the republican party running for commissioner, anyone registered in the republican party could vote on them and decide who is going to be on the ballot in the general election; However, anyone registered as a democrat, could not vote in the republican primary, and vice versa. This is called a closed primary and this is what we have in Idaho. For those not affiliated with any party, they cannot vote in the republican or democrat primaries. However, they may affiliate themselves with a certain party at any time up to election day giving them the ability to vote for that party’s candidate in the general election. The independent candidates only appear on the ballot in the general election.
The disappointment you may feel with the candidates presented on the general ballot could be summed up in a simple acronym R.I.N.O. RINO stands for Republican In Name Only. These wolves in sheep’s clothing proclaim that they support what you value but are working to destroy what we love about Idaho. They are doing this by encouraging Democrats and Independents to register as Republicans for the May primary.
Why are the RINOs pushing for Democrats and Independents to do this? Because this is their prime opportunity to stomp out their opposition before the race begins. Which means that if they can out vote the good candidates now then they will succeed in taking Idaho further and further away from its famed freedom polices. Idaho’s primary elections are usually thought of as unimportant in the bigger picture. However, this is exactly what the RINOs are hoping to exploit to subvert the will of the majority.
In conclusion, this is the time to be active in researching the candidates, spreading the word about the primary, and reminding others that it is critical to show up and vote on May 17th 2022. To help you determine how to spread the word, start by thinking of 5 people you know who live in Idaho and then talk to them about what you now know is happening and encourage them to vote in the upcoming Primary Election on May 17th. By doing this, you will help ensure that the Democrats and socialist RINOs are not able to subvert our electoral process. Your freedom depends on this.
