After being denied several times to publish letters under his own name, Benjamin Franklin penned the name of Mrs. Silence Dogood, publishing 14 letters in 1722.
The letters were published in The New-England Courant every two weeks, and amused readers as they poked fun at various parts of Colonial life.
Franklin was also known for revolutionary sentiments and criticisms of British policies. After American’s overwhelming opposition to the Stamp Act, Franklin wondered if the colonies should break free of England and form their own nation. He began working actively for Independence, and is considered one of the country’s Founding Fathers.
Mrs. Silence Dogood the Second has penned a letter to Idaho Governor Brad Little in a plea for him to reconsider the unconstitutional order to self-isolate.
Representative Heather Scott of District 1 in Idaho has called the order unconstitutional and draconian, and asked for the order to be lifted.
Bonner County Sheriff Daryl Wheeler has written a letter to the Governor wanting him to ease the restrictions placed on the citizens.
Adams County prosecutor Christopher Boyd penned a two-page letter to Governor Little saying that he could not, in all good conscience, enforce this order and urged him to rescind it.
The Dogood letter adds to this list and outlines several great points for the Governor to consider, including pointing out that the “emergency” so far has impacted only 0.08% of Idaho citizens, and was fatal in only 0.002% of residents.
With due respect, a 79 in 10,000 chance that an Idaho resident might catch a disease with a 98% recovery rate does not, to any reasonable mind, rise to the level of “extreme peril.” A 20 in a million chance that an Idaho resident might die from Covid-19 does not, under any coherent theory, create “extreme peril.”
Additionally, Dogood challenges the arguments that Attorney General Lawrence Wasden has used to defend the stay-at-home orders.
While freely acknowledging that there may be places elsewhere in the world, including in the United States, that would meet the statutory definition of “extreme emergency” under the Idaho Code, the Governor’s statutory-based power to issue the Order requires an “extreme emergency” within the State of Idaho!
The order is due to expire this week, with many Democrats advocating for an extension of the order.
