As part of a private high school civics class comprised of students in the 7th through 12th grade levels, students were asked to write opinion editorials on topics of their own choosing which reflect current themes in governance and policy-making. Over the course of the next few weeks the class will be tracking the views of and commentary on their op-eds with the goal of generating as much meaningful community engagement as possible. Awards will be given to the students who most successfully generate meaningful community engagement with their op-ed. Jim Woodward vs. Scott Herndon

This May, Republican voters who live in District 1 of North Idaho will be faced with two names on the ballot when voting for the one available Senate seat. The goal of the article you’re reading is to give you unbiased facts, in order for YOU as a voter to make the most informed decision. But always remember to do your own research!
About the candidates:
Jim Woodward is the incumbent running, and he was first elected back in 2018. Jim’s main focus as Senator is to “promote innovative and principled leadership,” which he plans to execute in many fields such as transportation, education, natural resources, and communication. He strives to be an accessible member of Idaho’s government, in an effort to accurately represent the members of Idaho’s Legislative District 1. Woodward has gathered many endorsements, including the Idaho Farm Bureau, Idaho Education Association, and the NRA. Woodward states that education and infrastructure are two of the prime roles of government and will continue to be his top priorities as Senator.

Scott Herndon is the non-incumbent running against Woodward in the Senate race. Coming in with experience in home-building, computer programming, and being a business owner, along with 18 years of residence in the area, many see a great amount of potential in him. Herndon is vocal about his faith and for the past 5 years has served as the Bonner County jail chaplain, and now serves as the Bonner County Central Committee Chairman. Scott Herndon’s website features a section titled “Herndon vs Woodward,” where you’ll find a few examples of how Woodward voted on certain bills in the Senate, along with an explanation of how Herndon says he would have voted.

The Past vs. the Future
Scott Herndon has made a few very bold points opposing many of Jim Woodward’s decisions while serving as Senator for the past 4 years, such as Woodward’s votes considering mandatory vaccines, illegal immigration, and critical race theory. These are all topics that are and should be of concern to all voters, because it’s decisions like these that, when made at local and state levels, can have a massive impact on the individual’s everyday life. Going forward, Woodward would like to continue to take a stand on topics such as recreation and diversification, among others. These, too, can impact the way we live our lives.
As stated before, it’s always important to perform your own research, to assure the weight of our decisions rests on our own intellect, not simply the opinions and input of others. Thank you for taking the time to educate yourself on a couple of Idaho’s potential future leaders.
