I-84 Reopens After Wildfire

PENDLETON, ORE. – Interstate 84 in eastern Oregon has reopened a day after it was shut down due to a wildfire that forced evacuations east of Pendleton.

Officials with the Oregon Department of Transportation say the the interstate in the area of the Weigh Station Fire is down to one lane, and motorists are being asked to slow down and drive with extra caution.

I-84 was closed in both directions on Saturday between Pendleton and the Oregon-Idaho border.

As of Sunday afternoon the fire had burned 700 acres of timber and grass and was zero percent contained.

Evacuations were ordered for homes north and south of Deadman Pass. Officials say they are assessing the threat to those homes Sunday to see when residents might return.

The Blue Mountain Type 3 Interagency Incident Management team took command of the fire Sunday morning. Firefighters are attacking the fire from the air and the ground. It is burning on land managed by the Oregon Department of Forestry.
