California Wants To Force People To Vote
by Shari Dovale
A liberal legislator from Nancy Pelosi’s San Fransisco Bay area has decided that automatic voter registration is not enough. He wants compulsory voting, with penalties that could include imprisonment.
Marc Levine has introduced AB-2070 for Compulsory Voting. Current law allows for voting, as an option.
This bill would instead require a person who qualifies and is registered to vote to cast a ballot, marked or unmarked in whole or in part, at every election held within the territory within which the person resides and the election is held. The bill would require the Secretary of State to enforce this requirement.
Keep in mind that they already have a law that automatically registers these folks to vote. Now, it seems, without their prior knowledge or approval, they are automatically registered and will be required to vote, whether they want to or not.
It would seem that this would cover every election from the Presidential election, to county elections, to an election for an unopposed precinct committeeman. Considering that some jurisdictions have these types of elections every few months, and many that are not well publicized, this could become a very real issue for many people.
What’s next? A ballot that is filled in for them, just in case they forget to vote? After all, that would keep them out of prison, right?
Comparing the proposal to jury duty, of which Levine has done, people could be subjected to fines or even incarceration if they don’t choose to vote. The bill requires the Secretary of State to enforce the bill with “civil remedies” to maximize voter turnout.
“Democracy is not a spectator sport — it requires the active participation of all of its citizens,” Levine said. “California is a national leader on expanding voting rights to its citizens. Those rights come with a responsibility by registered voters to cast their ballot and make sure that their voice is heard by their government.”
This should move us that much closer to an Orwellian State.
