As part of a private high school civics class comprised of students in the 7th through 12th grade levels, students were asked to write opinion editorials on topics of their own choosing which reflect current themes in governance and policy-making. Over the course of the next few weeks the class will be tracking the views of and commentary on their op-eds with the goal of generating as much meaningful community engagement as possible. Awards will be given to the students who most successfully generate meaningful community engagement with their op-ed. Thanks so much for partnering with us to create this experience for the children and teaching them to be actively involved in the governance of their community!

North Idaho Voter Services: What is It?

By: HSC16

Many residents in North Idaho have been wondering: What is North Idaho Voter Services? Who runs the organization?

North Idaho Voter Services, also known as NIVS, was founded by Diana Dawson and is a political 501 c-4 organization whose mission is “the election of qualified candidates through voter participation and trustworthy information”, according to their website: northidahovoterservices.org.

Diana Dawson, the founder of NIVS, has donated to the Take Back Idaho PAC, which states on its website that its mission is to “take Idaho back from the grip of the IFF [Idaho Freedom Foundation]…” and one of its Directors is Jim Jones, the author of an article attacking conservative Idaho leaders mentioned below.

The organization tries to portray itself as a Republican, conservative organization. However, the NIVS website includes put-downs of conservatives as “loud far right rhetoric”.

On the News tab of the website, a large percentage of articles are from the Sandpoint Reader, the Daily Bee, and the Idaho Capital Sun and have titles such as “Extremist legislators demonstrate why voters need to clean house”. The aforementioned Idaho Education News article listed on NIVS’ news page is a hit piece on conservative legislators, such as Heather Scott, and calls on Idahoans to register to vote as Republicans in the May primary and “help with the cleaning”.

NIVS says that they want qualified conservative candidates. However, their candidate slate includes Jim Woodward and Sage Dixon among other suspect candidates.

Senator Jim Woodward portrays himself as a protector of Idaho students. However, his voting record says different. Woodward voted for Bill S1193, which gave the State Board of Education money to partner with an Idaho branch of the radical left-wing organization called National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). This group pushes critical race theory (CRT) ideology, including transgenderism and social justice theories on children as young as 5 years old. Indoctrinating Idaho’s children and teaching them that they are racist or oppressed is not a conservative value.

Representative Sage Dixon took campaign contributions from PhRMA, Idaho Medical PAC, Idaho Healthcare Association PAC, Johnson & Johnson, and Bayer US. During Fall 2021, a group of conservative Idaho legislators tried to reconvene the House to pass medical freedom legislation regarding COVID mandates in Idaho. Sage Dixon went to the Capitol but sat on the sidelines and did not attempt to protect his constituents from unconstitutional, overreaching mandates. Maybe because he receives campaign donations from pharmaceutical companies that are being enriched by the vaccine mandate and health protocols? Failing to stand up for the citizens’ rights in Idaho is not a conservative value.

NIVS supporting candidates like Woodward and Dixon shows that the organization supports Democrats and RINOs (Republicans in Name Only) not true conservative candidates that will represent Idahoans’ best interests.
