Misappropriation Of Public Property

Editorial by Sheriff Daryl Wheeler

On October 26th, at 9:10 a.m., the Bonner County Commissioners voted unanimously to give away 4 acres of public property. The 4 acres pictured below are situated between the Sheriff’s Office and the Juvenile Detention Center. This land had been set aside by a previous Board of Commissioners for future law enforcement and judicial expansion.

The giveaway of this invaluable, irreplaceable land was done without consulting the people it affects the most: Justice Services, the Prosecutor, the Judges, Juvenile Detention, the Clerk, and myself (for the Sheriff’s Office). Further, no consideration was given to future indebtedness for Bonner County taxpayers.

During the Hearing, Bonner County Fair Director Darcy Smith presented the proposal and noted that there had been collaboration with the Fair Board. Sandpoint Mayor Shelby Rognstad spoke and connected the project to the proposed Recreational Tax. Commissioner Dan McDonald basically said that a group of guys have wanted an ice rink now for 20 years, and he was proud take the lead to make it happen. Then Commissioner Steve Bradshaw made the motion to give away the property.

This shameless “bread and circuses” act was perpetrated so the people of Bonner County would have a place to go ice skating. If you don’t appreciate this DEFUND THE POLICE action, then call, write, or visit your Bonner County Commissioners and demand that they rescind this give away of public property!
