School Levy Coming Back To North Idaho

School Levy Coming Back To North Idaho

Boundary County School District Levy Info
For March 9th, 2021

The Boundary County School District is again attempting to get an M & O school levy passed on March 9th.

The voters said “NO” on November 3rd, 2020 by more than 500 votes.

But the school district is trying again on March 9th, 2021 in the amount of $2,400,000 PER YEAR for 2 YEARS for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2021.

How this affects property owners is the following:  the ESTIMATED average annual cost to the Boundary County taxpayer on the proposed levy is a tax of $187 per $100,000 of taxable assessed value based on “CURRENT CONDITIONS”, and again this is “PER YEAR.”

Nearly half (48 percent) of Idaho’s state general fund is spent on K – 12 public education.  For the fiscal year 2017, the Idaho legislature appropriated approximately $1.9 billion to the support budget of public schools.  According to the US Department of Education, the Federal Government contributes about 8% to funding US public schools.  But school administrators always want more, more and more!

If you are a property owner in Boundary County, you have probably experienced a very noticeable increase in the value of your property.  As a real estate broker here in Boundary County and watching what happened in home and land sales this past year, I believe that our property values are going to escalate exponentially due to the influx of new people coming into our county, many paying quite high prices in order to relocate here.

In Idaho, our property taxes are determined by the values of property in our county which includes new “solds”. The school levy sample ballot states “current conditions” indicating that these increased values will come into play when our property values are determined by reevaluation.

In case you don’t know, per Idaho Code 33-802, if a county school district gets levies passed 7 years in a row, it then becomes a permanent yearly levy and voters have no say after that occurs.

Please plan to vote on this important issue that affects all property owners in Boundary County.

The voting polls will be open on Tuesday, March 9th from 8 am to 8 pm.  Please encourage family, friends and neighbors to vote as well. There is power in numbers and voting is one way to fight for our freedom.

You can also attend BC school board meetings. The monthly school board dates used to be posted on the BCSD website, but they are not posted in this year’s calendar and under the “Board Meetings” prompt, nothing is there for the dates, agenda or past meeting minutes.

The BCSD phone number is (208) 267-3146 if you would like to obtain further information, to find out when the board meetings are scheduled, or if you are interested in running for a position on the school board.

In Freedom,

Donna Capurso
