The Ethos Behind the GI Bill That Rep. Omar Doesn’t Understand

Rep. Ilan Omar made the following statement on Twitter:
“Imagine what it would do for our country and those who live here if we were to take the ethos behind the original G.I. Bill and apply it to everybody—canceling all student debt and making public colleges, universities, and vocational schools tuition-free.”
Everyone in this country should receive the GI Bill, as part of their benefit package if they serve in the Military.
The GI Bill is not free, however. There are costs involved that Rep. Omar does not want you to know about. She just wants you to see Big Dollar $igns and jump up for a “free“ handout.
The Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944
President Franklin D. Roosevelt seemed determined to do better for veterans returning from World War II than they had done for the veterans of World War I (See Bonus Army)
The Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, also called the G.I. Bill, was created to help veterans of World War II. It established hospitals, made low-interest mortgages available and granted stipends covering tuition and expenses for veterans attending college or trade schools.
The Readjustment Benefits Act of 1966 extended these benefits to all veterans of the armed forces, including those who had served during peacetime.
It has been updated a few times since then, with the most recent being the Forever GI Bill, signed by President Trump in 2017.
The GI Bill is credited with creating the middle class in the United States, which had an extremely positive impact on this country. It allowed people to purchase homes and receive higher education, which previously had been unavailable to them due to the costs.
To qualify for any of the programs under the GI Bill, you must serve your country honorably. The government has made an agreement with you, and your part is to serve in the Armed Forces, with specific requirements that you agree to when you sign the contract. The benefit package that you receive upon separation from the Military is the government’s side of the agreement.
Nothing in life is free, and when the Democrats get around to telling you that basic truth, it may be too late,
