Broadwater County, Montana Sheriff
Takes Stand On Behalf Of The Citizens
By Tim Ravndal
For the past 10 years Broadwater County Commissioner Laura Obert has been at the helm of the executive branch of the local government. Under her leadership (or lack thereof) the county has been exposed to several lawsuits.
A six year investigation by FBI agents resulted in a felony conviction of the local Disaster & Emergency Services Director. The crime was fraud against the people. Restitution of thousands of dollars was ordered. The conviction came from the mis-use of federal funding within the county.
Commissioner Obert obstructed due process and open meeting laws throughout this process. Her disregard of the rights of the people brought a state charge against her as an official for illegally taking pay above the statutorily afforded amounts.
Her open spending of taxpayer dollars is not an exclusive problem to Broadwater County. Many county and city government officials are not doing what they are supposed to. They are not above the law.
This tragedy that we are reporting is a result of the lack of oversight by the people. We have all been encased in a utopia of trust when it comes to our local officials. Few citizens if any attend the local meetings where these decisions are made. When someone does attend a meeting and call the officials out they are chastised and belittled by these officials that think they are above the law.
Sheriff Wynn Meehan of Broadwater County is the latest sheriff that has been exposed to the tyranny here in Broadwater County. In the video he explains to the commissioners that he works for the people to defend the Constitution. He goes on further to say that the commissioners are not doing the job they are hired to do and spending money that is not there is wrong. His frustrations are clearly directed at Commissioner Obert, but the Chair Mike Delger is given equal culpability for his silence.
