IT PAYS TO BE A SAFE, INFORMED BOATER

Stephanie West and her daughter were among the 52 students attending the April and May Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR) Boating Safety Classes presented by the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office Recreation Safety Section. In early June the Sheriff’s Office was advised Stephanie was the winner of a Cabela’s Essential 2500 Inflatable Personal Flotation Device.
The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) introduced a new national campaign called “Spring Aboard”. The campaign was designed to encourage boaters to take a boating safety class before the 2016 boating season began. One attendee from each of the three Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation Regions received a free Personal Flotation Device.
As we all know, an informed and knowledgeable boat operator is much more likely to recognize hazardous conditions on the water and be less likely to have an accident. Nationally, 90% of all boating accidents involved operators who had received NO BOATING SAFETY EDUCATION. Locally, summer has not started and there have been three accidents on Lake Coeur d’Alene involving operators without Boating Safety Education.
Free classes are held the 3rd Saturday of each month. Reservations can be made on the IDPR webpage https://idpr.idaho.gov/forms/recreation/boating/education-form.aspx, Emailing rbjelland@kcgov.us, or calling KCSO Recreation Safety Section at (208)446-2250.
