Planned Parenthood Protest Rallies Draw Hundreds

by Sam Cates

An estimated two hundred people gathered on April 23rd at the busy street corners of Ruby and Indiana less than a block away from Spokane’s Planned Parenthood center near downtown Spokane. They carried signs promoting life, the inalienable rights of the unborn, the effects abortion has on the would be parents and families, and scriptures from the Holy Bible that support the wrong in murdering the unborn.

There were several key speakers who took the small stage prepared on the northeast corner, including Kim Hall of Selkirk Prolife Alliance, state representative Matt Shea, and a young woman who shared her story about choosing life for her child, at the age of 15 despite the pressures in society to abort her unborn baby.

Many passers by honked and have thumbs up in support of the rally for the unborn, but many obscene gestures and unsavory words were displayed by drivers and passengers on the streets of Spokane.

Despite the many shares the event had on Facebook and the many people who shared news of the event by word of mouth, the attendance seemed down from previous events, which may have been partially due to the poor weather conditions. Even so, the people who did show up, ranging in age from infancy to retirement, were very enthusiastic and happy to share their time to raise awareness about the killing that occurs daily behind the gates of Planned Parenthood, and give love and support to anyone considering an abortion.

Later that same day many of the people who participated in the rally in Spokane met again on the busy corners of Sprague and Pine just a few short blocks from the Spokane Valley Planned Parenthood location. Again we were met with much support and opposition, including one man who stopped traffic to scream “I already have four children! I don’t need any more, and if all those women would have had abortions I wouldn’t be paying so much child support!”

Gabe Blomgren of Covenant Church Spokane shared with us in an announcement just days before the event, that he was adamant about taking that day from work so that he could participate,  and explained that work is no excuse to miss an opportunity to support the community in a Christ like manner. Likewise, I find weather to be no excuse to skip an opportunity to show women our love and support, and help them understand that pregnancy is not the end of their life. If we as Christians want to truly live a Christ centered life, we must put others before our personal needs, to share the gospel and love that Christ gave us. If anyone had an excuse to miss the rally it was me. I had no rain gear readily available, and no mode of transportation to get there except a motorcycle that was on the verge of a breakdown. But I went anyway. I braved the cold wet roads on an early Saturday morning, breaking from my regular routine of house work, yard work, and vehicle repairs, to show others the love that Christ has to give through His word and His people.

All in all it was a great day with a powerful message a presence shown with people representing many areas from Spokane and Deer Park, and as far as Priest River, Idaho. My only wish is that more people would take time to share the love and support these women considering abortion need. So next time you see someone, even just one protester standing at the gates of an abortion center, support them, stand with them, pray with them. I once thought it was absurd to stand at a street corner, sign in hand, having insults hurled at me for little benefit. But now I know that every soul standing to protect the unborn counts. Every person who takes a stand makes a difference. Stand with us!
